Another high-pressure moment. Another statement performance from Arthur Gea in 2026.

The 21-year-old Frenchman upset World No. 15 Jakub Mensik 7-6(4), 6-4 on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, where he is adding another intriguing chapter to his breakthrough season. Having defeated Ben Shelton in the previous round, Gea has now won 13 of his past 15 tour-level matches since July, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.

“I’m really happy about the result. I had a little revenge today, because at the US Open I stopped in this round,” Gea, who is now 4-1 against Top-20 players, said. “I wanted to go far this week, and obviously now it’s starting to be good. I hope it’s going to continue.”

Against one of the biggest servers on Tour, Gea beat Mensik at his own game. The Frenchman won 80 per cent (39/49) of his first-serve points and out-aced the Czech 11 to six, matching the World No. 15’s firepower on delivery. Gea then showed his composure under pressure in the first-set tie-break, recovering from 0/3 down to win seven of the final eight points.

In the second set, Gea carried that momentum and he ultimately saved a break point when serving out the match at 5-4 before sealing victory in one hour and 37 minutes.

Gea, who is competing in his first ATP Masters 1000 event and at a career-high World No. 56, has enjoyed a remarkable rise in 2026. He claimed his first ATP Tour title in Los Cabos in August before reaching the fourth round of the US Open as a lucky loser.

In Shanghai, he needed three sets to overcome Jaime Faria and Ugo Humbert in his opening two matches but has since dispatched Shelton and Mensik in straight sets to become the eighth active Frenchman to reach an ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final.

Gea has climbed 12 places to No. 44 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings this week, guaranteeing himself a Top-50 debut on Monday. He will next face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for a place in the semi-finals in Shanghai.

Davidovich Fokina brought 2023 champion Hubert Hurkacz's nine-match winning streak at the event to an end with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) victory — the Spaniard's second consecutive win in a third-set tie-break, having saved a match point to defeat Frances Tiafoe in the previous round.

After one-sided opening set, Davidovich Fokina found his rhythm against the big-serving Hurkacz, who was competing in Shanghai for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2023. Davidovich Fokina, who ultimately converted his third match point in a dramatic end to the clash, is this week aiming to win his third ATP Tour title. The 27-year-old Spaniard broke through in Mallorca in June and backed it up by winning in Chengdu — where he defeated Hurkacz in the final — two weeks ago.

Davidovich Fokina now leads Hurkacz 6-2 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series and has won his past four meetings against the Pole.
