Tsitsipas sinks fifth seed Buse in Gstaad opener

Stefanos Tsitsipas notched one of the biggest wins of his 2026 season at the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad Tuesday when he defeated fifth seed Ignacio Buse in the opening round.

The Greek 27-year-old cruised past Buse 6-4, 6-4 to snap his five-match losing streak against Top 50 opponents. With the win, Tsisipas also avenged his defeat to the Peruvian on grass last month at the ATP 250 event in Mallorca.

“Great tennis from my side,” Tsitsipas said. “I’m particularly happy with how I served and that first ball after the serve was on fire today…I want to build on that win and proceed with confidence and determination in the next one.”

Before arriving in Gstaad, Tsitsipas had earned only three tour-level wins since May. Next up for the Greek will be a clash with Swiss wild card Jerome Kym, who defeated countryman Dylan Dietrich in his first round match by a narrow margin 7-6(3), 2-6, 7-6(5) in the opening round.

Elswhere in Gstaad, Portugal's Jaime Faria defeated Stan Wawrinka in what was the Swiss legend's final appearance at his home country tournament. After saving set point and taking the first set in a thrilling 10/8 tie-break, Wawrinka proved unable to capitalise on momentum, ultimately falling by a scoreline of 7-6(8), 4-6, 4-6. The 41-year-old Wawrinka made 14 appearances in Gstaad dating back to his debut at the tournament in 2003. 

In other action, sixth seed Juan Manuel Cerundolo rallied past Zdenek Kolar 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and eight minutes. Frenchman Quentin Halys defeated Federico Cina 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6), while AleksandrShevchenko outlasted Alexandre Muller 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Yannick Hanfmann defeated Pedro Martinez 7-6(8), 6-1.
