There was French success on Day 1 of the AITO Hangzhou Open in China, where Kyrian Jacquet and Valentin Royer both defeated an Australian to advance to the second round.
Jacquet overcame Aleksandar Vukic 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3 to record his third tour-level win of the season. With his victory, the 25-year-old climbed eight spots to No. 99 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. Jacquet, who has reached a career-high No. 102, will next meet third seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Royer also advanced at the ATP 250 on Wednesday, downing Adam Walton, 6-3, 6-4. Royer has fond memories in Hangzhou, having advanced to his maiden tour-level final at the event last season. The 25-year-old came through qualifying 12 months ago and then defeated Top-25 stars Andrey Rublev and Learner Tien.
Royer will next play Daniil Medvedev, who is the top seed at the event. Rublev is seeded second. The event runs until Tuesday 29 September.
