Hubert Hurkacz withdrew from the Libema Open on Thursday due to a lower back injury. The Pole was unable to take to court for his second-round match against Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal at the ATP 250 grass-court event.
Hurkacz defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets in the first round in ‘s-Hertogenbosch but was denied a first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting against Lajal due a back injury.
The 22-year-old Lajal became the second Estonian man to record a tour-level grass-court win in the Open Era when he overcame Laslo Djere in the first round. Competing in his third tour-level event, the qualifier will face Alexei Popyrin or Zizou Bergs in his maiden quarter-final. Lajal is up 30 spots to No. 165 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
Hurkacz, who won a grass-court title in Halle in 2022, is 15-11 on the year, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. The 28-year-old Pole reached the final in Geneva last month, falling to Novak Djokovic, who captured his 100th tour-level title at the clay-court event.
