Sebastian Korda and Jordan Thompson won an Indian Wells thriller on Tuesday when they saved one match point to defeat eighth seeds Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski 6-7(2), 7-5, 11-9 at the BNP Paribas Open.
The American-Australian team won 84 per cent (36/43) of their first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats, and hung tough in the Match Tie-break, saving one match point on the Skupski's serve at 8/9 when Salisbury mishit a volley, allowing Korda and Thompson off the hook. They then converted on their first opportunity to advance to the quarter-finals after one hour and 56 minutes.
Korda and Thompson are teaming for the third time and have enjoyed previous success together, lifting the ATP Masters 1000 trophy in Madrid last season. They will next play Jiri Lehecka and Alejandro Tabilo.
The Czech-Chilean duo beat Jamie Murray and Adam Pavlasek 7-6(1), 6-4. Murray played his 1000th tour-level match earlier this week in the California desert.
