A windy day in the California desert ended with rain interrupting the final two matches of the Thursday schedule at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
Mariano Navone led local favourite and #NextGenATP star Learner Tien 7-5, 2-3 when play was suspended just before 9 p.m. local time (PST). At 9:25 p.m., tournament officials cancelled play for the day.
In the other suspended ATP Tour clash, Quentin Halys led Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 4-1, while three Hologic WTA Tour matches were also interrupted.
Despite the inclement weather bringing proceedings to an early close, it was an action-packed Day 2 at the BNP Paribas Open. The fast-rising Joao Fonseca, who triumphed at the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF, was among the first-round winners. The 18-year-old Brazilian overcame Jacob Fearnley 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 on a blustery Stadium 1.
Fonseca’s fellow #NextGenATP star Jakub Mensik and Matteo Arnaldi were among the others to secure a second-round spot, while home favourite Jenson Brooksby downed Benjamin Bonzi 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 for his first tour-level win since the 2023 Australian Open.
