Rafael Jodar sent an early signal to his Nitto ATP Finals qualification rivals on Monday at the Rolex Paris Masters, where he marched to an opening victory against Alejandro Tabilo.
Having defeated Chilean Tabilo for the loss of just six games in Basel last week, Jodar went one better in the French capital by posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory. The 20-year-old Jodar, who was competing on the same day he broke the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time, converted five of 12 points he earned, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
Jodar is currently ninth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, which is into its final week. He is just inside the cut for the Nitto ATP Finals and, with his dominant Day 1 victory in Paris, the #NextGenATP star has cranked up the pressure on those directly above and below him in the battle to qualify for the prestigious season finale in Turin.
“[I had] the same mindset and mentality I have had this first year,” Jodar said when asked about the keys to his win against Tabilo. “I tried to play my game, but every match is different and especially when you don’t know the tournament, because it’s my first year here in Paris. I’m enjoying it and am happy to get the first win.”
Jodar and Tabilo have played five times in 2026. The Chilean lefty won their first meeting for the loss of just three games in Indian Wells in March, but Jodar has since won eight of the nine sets they have contested and leads 4-1 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series.
Up next for Jodar in Paris will be a second-round meeting with Casper Ruud, who raced past qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3, 6-2. Ignacio Buse was also a first-round winner in Jodar’s quarter of the draw: The Peruvian overcame Zizou Bergs 6-2, 6-4 to advance to face fourth seed Daniil Medvedev.
In the top half of the draw, Lorenzo Musetti set a blockbuster second-round clash with new World No. 1 Alexander Zverev. The former World No. 5 Musetti edged Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(3), 7-6(10) for his first Rolex Paris Masters match win since his quarter-final run in 2022.
There was also some early joy for a home favourite in Paris. Luca Van Assche defeated Mariano Navone 6-3, 7-5 to earn his first win at his home Masters 1000 event. The 22-year-old Van Assche, who broke the Top 40 for the first time in August, will take on 15th seed Learner Tien or Stefanos Tsitsipas for a third-round spot.
