Khachanov defeats Auger-Aliassime once again to advance in Beijing

Karen Khachanov earned victory against Felix Auger-Aliassime for the second time this month on Wednesday at the China Open in Beijing, where he downed the second seed 6-3, 6-3 to reach the second round at the ATP 500 event.

Four weeks ago, Khachanov sunk the Canadian in four sets in the second round at the US Open, having arrived at the major at No. 50 in the PIF ATP Rankings, his lowest position since 2017. The 30-year-old, who had lost in the first round at all three hard-court events in the lead up to the US Open, went on to reach his third major semi-final at the hard-court event before he fell to eventual champion Alexander Zverev, who is the top seed in Beijing.

Now in Beijing, Khachanov is back inside the Top 30 and played with consistency and capitalised on Auger-Aliassime errors to improve to 4-2 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series and record his 18th Top-10 win. The 2019 Beijing semi-finalist Khachanov, who did not face a break point against Auger-Aliassime, will next meet Arthur Rinderknech or qualifier Alex Molcan.

Auger-Aliassime’s first-round defeat has hindered his hopes of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals for the third time. The 26-year-old is 12th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin but is likely to drop further, with everyone around him competing this week in Beijing and Tokyo. Last year, Auger-Aliassime advanced to the semi-finals at the year-end event.
