Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik produced a commanding doubles display on Sunday lunchtime to move Team Europe to within one victory of reclaiming the Laver Cup.
After initially falling a break behind, Cobolli and Mensik settled into their rhythm and took control, racing past Team World’s Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz 7-5, 6-3 to stretch Europe’s lead to 10-5.
Alexander Zverev, the No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, can now clinch the trophy for Team Europe if he defeats Learner Tien in the second match of Sunday’s finale, with Europe seeking to reclaim the title after last year’s defeat to Team World in San Francisco.
Team World had breathed new life into their hopes of a comeback on Saturday, winning two singles matches to cut into Europe’s advantage. But with every victory worth three points on Sunday, Cobolli and Mensik’s doubles triumph could prove decisive.
“It’s the third year I came to the Laver Cup and I had never won a match, so I’m really happy,” Cobolli said. “It happens here in London where I love to play, especially with one of my best friends on Tour. I am really happy.”
Mensik is now 2-0 in doubles this week, having partnered Carlos Alcaraz on Friday evening to defeat Alexander Bublik and Fritz.
