Daniil Medvedev leads a distinguished list of singles stars competing in the Mutua Madrid Open doubles draw, which was released late Sunday evening.
The No. 4 player in the PIF ATP Rankings is partnering American Tommy Paul for the first time. It is only Medvedev’s second doubles appearance since June 2022 — he competed with Roman Safiullin earlier this month in Monte-Carlo. Medvedev and Paul will open against 12th seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.
Five of the Top 15 singles players in the world are in the doubles draw, with World No. 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas, World No. 11 Alex de Minaur, World No. 13 Taylor Fritz and World No. 15 Ben Shelton competing. Tsitsipas is playing with brother Petros Tsitsipas and De Minaur is teaming with fellow Australian Alexei Popyrin. Fritz and Shelton are partnering one another.
Other teams of singles players to watch include Alexander Bublik/Denis Shapovalov, Sebastian Korda/Jordan Thompson and Aslan Karatsev/Zhang Zhizhen.
The Mutua Madrid Open is the first tournament participating in a new doubles trial featuring innovative rules including more singles versus doubles action, a reduced shot clock, quicker changeovers and free fan movement.
The top seeds are Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden, this year’s Australian Open and Miami champions. They will face Korda and Thompson in the first round.
The second seeds are Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, who have played in four consecutive editions of the Nitto ATP Finals. The Spanish-Argentine duo opens against Dutchmen Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof.
