Reilly Opelka summoned his best serving performance of the year on Friday at the Libema Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, where he upset top seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6(5), 7-6(5) to reach the semi-finals.

The 27-year-old American slammed 24 aces — the most he has hit in a best-of-three set match in 2025 — during the one-hour, 36-minute clash. In the second-set tie-break, Medvedev led 4/1, but he fired three double faults in his next three service points to bow out.

“It’s been a good serving week, especially today,” said Opelka, who is 2-4 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Medvedev. “When it’s hot like this, the court starts to bounce a lot more and react more to the different spins on my serve. Medvedev has been one of the best players in the world the past five years, so to get through him is a great win.

“His double faults at the end were because of my serve. The pressure that I put on him after serving so well and consistently is what caused the three double faults at the end of the tie-break.”

Having lost to Estonian Mark Lajal in the final round of qualifying, Opelka is the second lucky loser to advance to the ‘s-Hertogenbosch semi-finals after Rinky Hijikata in 2023. The American will next face Zizou Bergs for a spot in the championship match, after the Belgian edged Lajal 7-6(2), 7-6(4) to advance to the third ATP Tour semi-final of both his career and his 2025 season (Auckland, Marseille).

Ben Shelton has climbed to No. 10 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings by defeating Jiri Lehecka in the Stuttgart quarter-finals, and Medvedev will subsequently drop outside of the Top 10 on Monday.

It All Adds Up

In the other half of the draw in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Gabriel Diallo delivered a statement by upsetting third seed Karen Khachanov 7-6(6), 6-4 to reach his second ATP Tour semi-final. The 23-year-old Canadian, who is up seven spots to No. 48 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, will debut inside the Top 50 on Monday.

Prior to this week, Diallo was yet to earn a tour-level win on grass, but has since shown a certain pedigree on the surface. He saved two match points to defeat two-time ‘s-Hertogenbosch finalist Jordan Thompson, and fired 19 aces during his one-hour, 52-minute win against Khachanov.

Chasing a spot in his second ATP Tour final (Almaty 2024), Diallo will face second seed Ugo Humbert, who produced a clinical display to defeat Nuno Borges 6-1, 6-4 in just 67 minutes. Fired up from the outset, the Frenchman did not face a break point, according to Infosys ATP Stats, en route to earning consecutive wins at an event for the first time since claiming his seventh ATP Tour title in Marseille in February.
