Gael Monfils will make something of an unusual career transition once he signs off from his final season on the ATP Tour.
The former No. 6 player in the PIF ATP Rankings has revealed he will swap his racquets for spreadsheets in a new career in finance. Speaking after his US Open career came to a close on Thursday with a second-round defeat to Learner Tien, Monfils confirmed his next professional move would be outside tennis, even if he will maintain a connection to the sport through his wife, WTA star Elina Svitolina.
“I have a new chapter coming next year,” Monfils said in his post-match press conference. “I will work in finance. I already signed to work in wealth management in a Swiss company. So my next chapter will be working in an office and working in finance. I will always have a look on tennis, because I love the sport. My wife's playing.
“I don't think this next year I will do so much about tennis. But I'll be around definitely no matter what for Elina a little bit, but I will be more a finance guy.”
The 40-year-old Monfils, who has won 13 ATP Tour titles and 588 tour-level matches according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, still has some more tournaments in which to bring his brand of showstopping tennis to fans. Yet he says people may not realise just how suited his off-court personality could be to the finance world.
“Somehow, and I think you should ask my wife, you'd be very surprised, of course in tennis I am the way I am, but I think she can tell you that she wishes I was like this at home,” Monfils said when asked if he would bring his unique on-court style to his new career. “I think at home I'm a little bit more strict, more serious, completely different.
“Here is my joyful place where I can let my emotion go. Then I'm pretty… It's tough to say, but I'm really not flexible in a way. I really like everything done straightaway and [I am] a little bit of a maniac, so it fits that for sure as my next chapter. Tennis is completely different.”
