Lorenzo Musetti kept his cool to overcome one of the ATP Tour’s brightest prospects on Wednesday night at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes in Lyon.
The Italian recovered from a fast start by 17-year-old wild card Moise Kouame to earn a 6-4, 6-4 victory and advance to the quarter-finals of the indoor hard-court ATP 250 event. Roared on by a passionate home crowd, the #NextGenATP star showcased his shotmaking ability to establish a 3-1 lead in the opening set, but Musetti’s experience proved decisive as he settled into the contest to reach his sixth quarter-final of the season.
“It actually didn’t surprise me,” Musetti said when asked about Kouame’s level. “We practised together in Monte-Carlo this year, so I knew his potential. I knew today was going to be a tough match. I know you guys want a French man to win, but I was trying to play the best I can, and I managed to stay concentrated until the end.”
Musetti has battled various injuries throughout the 2026 season and arrived in Lyon following second-round exits at the US Open and in Shanghai. The former No. 5 player in the PIF ATP Rankings has found renewed form in France, however, winning both of his matches against countryman Matteo Arnaldi and Kouame without dropping a set.
In his first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Kouame, Musetti fired 26 winners to overcome the French teenager in one hour, 50 minutes. The 24-year-old, competing as the World No. 26, will next face Valentin Vacherot or Luca Van Assche.
In early action at the ATP 250 event, French lefty Corentin Moutet defeated 20-year-old countryman Felix Balshaw 6-4, 6-4 to earn consecutive tour-level victories for just the second time in 2026. Moutet will face Benjamin Bonzi or fourth seed Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals.
Balshaw and Kouame, who are both chasing a debut at the Next Gen ATP Finals, currently occupy eighth and ninth place, respectively, in the PIF ATP Live Race To Reggio Calabria.
Three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka also advanced after a dramatic opening-round encounter with Martin Landaluce. The Swiss wild card gave the Lyon crowd plenty to cheer about, converting his fifth match point to claim a thrilling 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-6(5) victory.
Wawrinka, who will retire following his campaign on home soil in Basel next week, next faces top seed Flavio Cobolli in Lyon.
