Mariano Navone produced a remarkable comeback on Sunday at the Gonet Geneva Open, battling past fellow Argentine Marco Trungelliti 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 to reach the second round.
Facing defeat while trailing by a set and 1-5 in the second, Navone flipped the match dramatically, winning 12 of the next 13 games in a gruelling contest that lasted two hours and 55 minutes. The World No. 44 was especially dominant on serve in the deciding set, losing just two of 14 points behind delivery, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
“It was a really tough match. Marco was playing unebelievably,” Navone said after his first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Trungelliti. “It was really challenging. I think he got cramps in the third set, but I’m very happy to be in the second round in this way.”
It’s not the first time that Navone has pulled off a great escape this season. Last month in Bucharest, he saved two match points against Botic van de Zandschulp in a dramatic three-hour, 33-minute semi-final before going on to capture his maiden ATP Tour title.
Navone will next face third seed Cameron Norrie in Geneva. The Argentine won their only previous meeting, which came in the semi-finals in Rio de Janeiro in 2024.
“With Norrie it will be a very tough match also,” Navone said. “He’s a very tough player and [in the] Top 20 right now. He’s lefty so he has many qualities in his game. But we’re playing on clay and on this court I feel great. We have to stay [focused] on all the points.”
