Tommy Paul has been back to business on court during the North American hard-court swing, but the American has still found time to look back on one of the most memorable days of his life.
Last month, Paul married his long-time partner Paige Lorenze at Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island, surrounded by family, friends and several of his fellow ATP Tour stars. Reilly Opelka served as best man, with Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe among the groomsmen.
Paul admits the emotion of the occasion caught him by surprise.
“I couldn't hold back my emotions,” Paul said. “I didn't think I was gonna cry. I was standing up there and my whole legs were just tweaking out. But the day was amazing… Paige walking down the aisle — that's something that I'll never forget.”
The ceremony was made even more special by Opelka's best man speech, which Paul described as “phenomenal”. The speech reflected on the impact Lorenze has had on Paul, who reached a career-high No. 8 in the PIF ATP Rankings last year.
Watch Paul reflect on his wedding day:
The celebrations carried on into the night, with Tiafoe providing one of the evening's memorable moments when he took his shirt off as the temperature rose.
“I really let it rip that night,” Paul said with a smile. “Frances took his shirt off way too early in the night, but he got away with it. I think everyone had a pretty great time on the dance floor.”
The honeymoon offered a compromise between the couple's respective wishes, eventually taking them to Nantucket, a destination Lorenze had been keen to visit after the wedding. But Paul made sure there was time for one of his favourite pastimes.
“We went to Nantucket,” Paul said. “Paige really wanted to go there after the wedding. I told her we'll give her half of a honeymoon. Her family's always out there in the summer. But I made her go fishing with me.”
