Holger Rune announced his withdrawal from the BNP Paribas Fortis European Open on social media Sunday.
"Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play in Brussels as planned," Rune posted on X. "My back has seized up, but fortunately, scans have confirmed that it’s nothing serious. So, 2-3 days of rest. Just really annoying and unfortunate timing."
Rune returned to action in September, following an 11-month layoff after suffering an Achilles injury in Stockholm last October. Upon his return, the 23-year-old notched a singles win for Denmark in its Davis Cup tie with Bulgaria. Rune then lost each of his opening matches at ATP Tour events in Tokyo and Shanghai.
A five-time ATP Tour titlist, Rune is the current No. 195 in the PIF ATP Rankings. The 23-year-old reached his career high of No. 4 in August 2023. That year, the Dane also competed at the Nitto ATP Finals.
