Holger Rune’s first forays back on the match court after an 11-month absence certainly did not disappoint this weekend in Copenhagen.
The Dane on Saturday edged his fellow former Top-5 star Grigor Dimitrov 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) to set his country on its way to a 3-2 victory in its Davis Cup World Group I tie with Bulgaria. Rune, who had defeated Iliyan Radulov on Friday in his first match since tearing his left Achilles last October, held his nerve superbly in the deciding-set tie-break against Dimitrov, having previously failed to serve the match out at 5-4.
With the tie level at 1-1 overnight, Bulgaria had begun Saturday by moving 2-1 ahead after Alexander Donski and Petr Nesterov prevailed 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(6) against August Holmgren and Johannes Ingildsen in the doubles rubber. Then came Rune’s intervention against Dimitrov to force a deciding singles clash, however, and Elmer Moeller promptly sank Radulov 6-2, 6-4 to secure victory for the home team.
A former No. 4 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, Rune has had to be patient and resilient in his long recovery from his serious injury. The 23-year-old, who is a five-time ATP Tour champion and competed at the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals, spoke about the highs and lows of his recovery in ATP’s new documentary, The Return of Holger Rune.
