Rune continues resurgent run in Indian Wells

Holger Rune continued his best week of the season on Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where he overcame Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 to reach his first semi-final of the year.

In a clash that was briefly disrupted by rain, the Dane won 10 out of 11 games after dropping the first set to turnaround the clash and reach his sixth ATP Masters 1000 semi-final after two hours and five minutes.

"It was tough mentally to play against him. It rained this morning so we didn't get to warm up too much and he started to find his timing," Rune said. "He was playing really well in the first set. I didn't have the same feeling as I had against Stef but I had to find a way and I changed my tactics during the match and that made it more difficult for him. I am happy I could stay composed."

Rune, who won the title at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris in 2022 aged just 19, arrived in Indian Wells struggling for form. The 21-year-old advanced to the fourth round at the Australian Open but struggled in February, failing to record consecutive wins at tour-level events in Rotterdam, Buenos Aires and Acapulco.

After defeating Frenchmen Corentin Moutet and Ugo Humbert in his opening two matches in California, the 12th seed further reminded everyone what he is capable of with a big win against Top 10 star Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Rune improved throughout his meeting with Griekspoor, breaking the Dutchman’s serve six times, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to improve to 1-2 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series. Chasing his fifth tour-level title, Rune will meet Daniil Medvedev or Arthur Fils in the semi-finals.

Griekspoor defeated the No. 2 in the PIF ATP Rankings Alexander Zverev in the second round in Indian Wells and was competing in his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final. The 28-year-old, who received treatment for a slight ankle issue during the quarter-final clash, is up nine spots to No. 34 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
