Holger Rune advanced to the BNP Paribas Open third round Saturday after Milos Raonic withdrew from the ATP Masters 1000 due to a calf strain.
A former World No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Raonic defeated Indian Sumit Nagal 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round but was unable to take the court for his first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Rune. The Canadian has suffered a difficult start to the season, having retired at the Australian Open and in Rotterdam due to a hip injury.
Rune, 20, awaits either 26th seed Lorenzo Musetti or Denis Shapovalov in the round of 32. The seventh seed is making his fourth appearance in Indian Wells, with his best result coming in 2023, when he reached the third round.
