Jannik Sinner is one of the game's most ruthless competitors.
But the World No. 1 put his steely resolve to one side in the blink of an eye Monday in Rome when opponent Jesper de Jong took a heavy tumble on Campo Centrale midway through the second set of their third-round match at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia.
Approaching the net on Sinner's backhand, de Jong tumbled heavily after appearing to lose his footing after stepping on the centre service line. His right wrist absorbed part of the impact.
Sinner immediately crossed the net to comfort the Dutchman as umpire Greg Allensworth quickly called for the phyiso. After a medical timeout, during which he had his wrist heavily strapped, De Jong returned to the court to play out the match.
De Jong received generous applause from Italian fans as he rose to his feet and headed to his courtside chair for treatment. The full extent of the injury is unknown at this time.
Sinner has now won 23 consecutive matches according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. He is also 61-0 against players outside the Top 20 since the start of the 2023 US Open.
Seeking his 20th tour-level title, and second on Italian soil following his triumph at the 2024 Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, Sinner next faces a tricky test against Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, who won their only previous clash on clay two years ago in Rome. Their Lexus ATP Head2Head series is knotted at 2-2.
