Jannik Sinner became just the second man to complete the Career Golden Masters on Sunday at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome.
The Italian joined Novak Djokovic as the only players to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 events in series history (since 1990) after defeating Casper Ruud in the final at the Foro Italico.
Sinner first broke through at Masters 1000 level in Toronto in 2023, when, aged 21, he overcame Alex de Minaur in straight sets to become just the second Italian to win a Masters 1000 title (Fabio Fognini, 2019 Monte-Carlo). That victory came after final appearances in Miami in 2021 and 2023.
The triumph in Canada sparked an impressive run through 2024, the year Sinner also rose to No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time. Sinner claimed hard-court Masters 1000 titles in Miami, Cincinnati and Shanghai, winning all three finals without dropping a set. In Shanghai, Sinner defeated Djokovic in the championship match after earlier securing ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honours.
Sinner arrived in Paris last October as a four-time Masters 1000 champion, but his extraordinary surge since means the 24-year-old has completed the Career Golden Masters seven years younger than Djokovic (aged 31).
Over the past six months, Sinner has dominated by clinching titles in Paris, Indian Wells and Miami without losing a set. He completed the full set of hard-court Masters 1000 crowns at Indian Wells.
Heading into the clay season, Sinner had never lifted the trophy in Monte-Carlo, Madrid or Rome. The Italian changed that emphatically this year, defeating great rival Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo final before overcoming Alexander Zverev in straight sets in Madrid to become the first player to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles.
Sinner then made more history on home soil in Rome, becoming the first Italian men’s champion at the tournament since Adriano Panatta in 1976.
The World No. 1 now owns 10 Masters 1000 titles, including two crowns in Miami, and remarkably has not lost a set in any Masters 1000 final he has won. Sinner is also riding a record 34-match winning streak at the level, with his last defeat coming in Shanghai in October when he retired against Tallon Griekspoor.
Djokovic remains the only player to complete the full set of nine Masters 1000 titles twice, first doing so in Cincinnati in 2018 before repeating the feat in 2020 at the same event. The Serbian has captured a record 40 Masters 1000 crowns.
Sinner has now claimed five Masters 1000 titles this season and is closing in on Djokovic’s single-season record of six, set in 2015. By winning Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome in the same year, Sinner has also joined Rafael Nadal as the only players to sweep all three clay-court Masters 1000 events in a season. Nadal achieved the feat in 2010.
