Alexander Zverev could face an early showdown against #NextGenATP Brazilian Joao Fonseca at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers after being placed in the same section of the Toronto draw on Friday.

Top seed Zverev will meet Adam Walton or Benjamin Bonzi in his opening match and could play Fonseca in the third round. The 18-year-old Fonseca, who earned his maiden Top 10 win against Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open, faces a qualifier on his tournament debut and would play 32nd-seeded Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the second round if he advances.

Zverev’s best result in Toronto came in 2018 when he reached the quarter-finals, but the German did win the crown in Montreal in 2017. The 28-year-old is seeded to meet Holger Rune in the quarter-finals and Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals.

Rune could play Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his opening match. The big-serving Frenchman leads the Dane 1-0 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series. The No. 9 in the PIF ATP Rankings Rune withdrew from Washington due to a back injury but on Friday shared an update via social media informing fans of his successful recovery.

Musetti opens against #NextGenATP Chinese lefty Juncheng Shang or a qualifier. The Italian is seeded to face 16th seed Tomas Machac in the last 16 and eighth seed Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals.

It All Adds Up

In the bottom half of the draw, American stars Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe could renew their intriguing Lexus ATP Head2Head rivalry in the quarter-finals. Shelton leads Tiafoe 2-1, with all three of their past meetings coming in the US. They are set to face off on Friday at the ATP 500 event in Washington.

Two-time tour-level titlist Flavio Cobolli is a potential fourth-round opponent for Shelton, while Tiafoe is seeded to meet Alex de Minaur in the last 16.

Second seed Taylor Fritz seeks his second ATP Masters 1000 crown and faces Camilo Ugo Carabelli or Roberto Carballes Baena in his opening match. The American might face sixth seed Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals.

Alexei Popyrin won the title in Canada last year and begins against Laslo Djere or Nicolas Arseneault. The 2021 champion and 10th seed Daniil Medvedev is in the same section as Rune and starts against Luciano Darderi or a qualifier. Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime will take on Fabian Marozsan or Hugo Dellien in his opening match, while Denis Shapovalov meets #NextGenATP American Learner Tien or a qualifier.

The ATP Masters 1000 event begins Sunday, with the final on Thursday 7 August. It is the first year the event has been an expanded 12-day event.
