Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari have shared many memorable moments for Greek tennis over the years, and this weekend they added another to the list.
The Greek stars each reached a tour-level final on Saturday, with Tsitsipas charging into the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad championship match and Sakkari advancing to the WTA 250 final on home soil in Athens. After both secured their places, Tsitsipas took to social media to celebrate the achievement.
“Proud of @mariasakkari’s inspirational run this week in Athens. Seeing us both in finals on the same day is a special moment for Greek tennis,” Tsitsipas, the former No. 3 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, wrote on X on Saturday night. “We’ve shared many milestones over the years, and this is just the beginning of another exciting chapter.”
Tsitsipas went on to lift the trophy in Gstaad, defeating Raphael Collignon in the final to claim his 13th ATP Tour title and first in more than 16 months. Sakkari will take on third seed Barbora Krejcikova in Sunday's Athens final.
Tsitsipas and Sakkari have helped elevate Greek tennis throughout their careers, highlighted by Greece's run to the United Cup semi-finals in 2023. At the teams event, the pair owns a 5-2 mixed doubles record together.
