Australian Aleksandar Vukic continued his dominant week at the Arizona Tennis Classic on Thursday to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP Challenger Tour 175 event, where the 27-year-old has dropped just three games across two matches en route to the last eight.
The World No. 69 in the PIF ATP Rankings cruised past Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-1 in the second round after winning 21 of his 23 first-serve points. Seeded seventh in Phoenix, Vukic built off his momentum from a 51-minute 6-1, 6-0 opening-round victory against Czech Vit Kopriva.
“I thought I was pretty solid today,” Vukic said during his on-court interview. “[Fabio] is a very tricky opponent, you don’t know what to expect sometimes. I had to stay ready and I thought I did a good job of that, played a great match.”
Vukic’s countryman Thanasi Kokkinakis took a more scenic route to the last eight Thursday, needing two hours to overcome Arthur Rinderknech 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Defending champion Nuno Borges also advanced after Benoit Paire retired due to a foot injury with the Portuguese No. 1 leading 4-2.
Rain suspended play for the day when Frenchman Arthur Cazaux was leading Matteo Berrettini 6-3. The match will resume Friday not before 4 p.m. Eastern Time / 9 p.m. Central European Time.
