Alexander Zverev has joined tennis’ most exclusive group, becoming the 30th member of the ATP No. 1 Club.
Several members of that exclusive group shared congratulatory messages for Zverev in a video montage, with Rafael Nadal, Jannik Sinner and Pete Sampras among those featured.
“Hey Sascha, many congrats for this amazing achievement,” said Nadal, who spent 209 total weeks at World No. 1 throughout his illustrious career. “I know how hard you worked to achieve your dreams. Finally, you did it. Two Grand Slams, now World No. 1. Many congratulations and super happy for you. All the very best in the future.”
Zverev, 29, leapfrogged Sinner for the pole position on Monday, becoming the second-oldest first-time No. 1 in PIF ATP Rankings history. Only John Newcombe was older when he first reached the summit. Before Zverev, the Italian Sinner was the most recent first-time No. 1.
“Huge congrats for an incredible year,” Sinner said. “Two Grand Slams and now finally you are No. 1 in the world. The 30th in history. Congrats to you, to your whole family and your whole team. Enjoy it and I hope to see you very soon.”
American icons Sampras, Courier and Jimmy Connors also shared heartfelt messages for the German.
“To get to three straight major finals, to win two of them, to finish Year-End No. 1, is one of the best years ever,” Sampras said. “Congratulations on all your success. I’ve been a big fan of yours ever since you started. Just to see you improve each year, but to see you really, really breakthrough this year was exciting to watch. You deserve it. You do all the right things. [You] work hard. So I just want to congratulate you and your team. Well deserved.”
Courier added: “Sascha, I first saw you as a 10-year-old practising on the court next to your brother in Florida. And now I look at the rankings and I see you at the top of the mountain. Congratulations on a well-earned World No. 1 ranking.”
Connors said: “Congratulations on your newest accomplishment of being No. 1 in the world. That is a very special group you have just joined. What an accomplishment and what a great summer you had, [winning] the French Open and the US Open. Keep up the good work, I’ll be watching.”
