Following Carlos Alcaraz's withdrawal from the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Wednesday, Jannik Sinner is guaranteed to remain No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings next week.
Alcaraz, who relinquished No. 1 to Jannik Sinner after falling to the Italian in the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters final, had the opportunity to return to the top spot in Barcelona. Had he won the title at the clay-court ATP 500 event, Alcaraz would have swapped places with Sinner once more.
But the Spaniard withdrew Wednesday due to injury following a first-round win Tuesday. Having reached the Barcelona final a year ago (when he lost to Holger Rune), Alcaraz was defending 330 PIF ATP Rankings points this week.
Sinner, who is not competing this week, currently leads Alcaraz by 390 points in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. The Italian will begin his 68th week as World No. 1 when the rankings are released on Monday.
The next tournament on the calendar is the Mutua Madrid Open, the second clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event of the season. Neither Sinner nor Alcaraz has any points to defend at the Caja Magica, where main draw action begins next Wednesday.
