Daniel Altmaier aims for the first Top-5 win of his career on Thursday when he faces Carlos Alcaraz for a spot in the quarter-finals at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
The German qualifier enjoyed a statement win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in his main-draw opener, but things are sure to ramp up in his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head clash with Alcaraz.
ATPTour.com recently caught up with Altmaier to take his mind away from tennis and into the kitchen. From guilty pleasures to cheat meals, the German discusses his culinary interests.
If you were to cook for yourself and some friends tonight, what would you cook?
Salad with meat, I need some proteins after my match! Probably some potatoes with meat and some veggies.
How would you rate your cooking skills?
From 0-10? I would say 3.5. I used to cook four years ago when I used to live alone in Berlin, I liked spending some time for myself.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Some dessert here and there is important! Nothing special. I’m more of a fan of salted sweets, something like salted caramel is good.
What do you eat in the buildup to a match?
It depends on the time of the match. Usually something simple like rice, but when I have more time, I would eat properly.
What about during the match?
I have my electrolytes and gels to keep up. Good hydration and for the energy levels.
Do you have a favourite restaurant?
I’m a big sushi fan. We travel to so many nice cities, so Nobu is always a good choice for me.
What is your favourite German dish?
A cheat meal for me would be to go and grab a German sausage or a kebab.
What is a food you would refuse to eat?
Oysters!
