Sander Arends and David Pel capped a memorable week on home soil Saturday at the Libema Open, where they became the sixth all-Dutch team to win the title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
The home favourites edged singles stars Zizou Bergs and Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(6), 7-6(5) in the grass-court ATP 250 final to win their first title of the season, and second as a team. In a championship match that featured no breaks of serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats, Arends and Pel held firm in two clutch tie-break displays to seal their one-hour, 43-minute victory.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling to get a title on home soil with one of my best friends on Tour,” Pel said. “In front of family, friends, physios, coaches, with the whole team… It’s an amazing experience.”
It marks a sixth tour-level doubles title for Arends and a second for Pel, who was competing at a career-high No. 24 in the PIF ATP Doubles Rankings. It is the first trophy on grass for both men.
The Dutchmen arrived in ‘s-Hertogenbosch after a quarter-final run at Roland Garros and, with their title showing at the Dutch ATP 250, they have jumped 18 spots to No. 27 in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings.
