Frances Tiafoe was on the brink of defeat at Roland Garros Saturday, but the 19th seed produced a dramatic comeback under the Court Suzanne-Lenglen floodlights to defeat Portugal's Jaime Faria 4-6, 6-7(2), 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-2 and advance to the fourth round at the clay major.
With his three-hour, 59-minute victory, Tiafoe became the first American male player to reach the Roland Garros fourth round in back-to-back years since Andre Agassi from 2001-03.
“It was great,” Tiafoe said. “Even if I would tell you that I feel tired, it doesn’t matter. It just feels good to get through that. It wasn’t looking good there for a lot of that match. These ones are big. Just gave myself another chance to stay in the event.”
Tiafoe was just five points from defeat when Faria served at 4-3, AD/40, in the third set. With elimination looming, the American dug deep to extend the rallies and apply pressure on Faria's serve. After earning three break points in the game, Tiafoe eventually converted his fourth when the Portuguese misfired a forehand.
That escape ignited Tiafoe's comeback. The American elevated his intensity from the baseline, dominating the third-set tie-break to force a fourth set, in which he dropped only one game. The 28-year-old carried that momentum into the decider, in which he broke Faria's serve twice to seal a gritty five-set victory. The American is the only seeded player remaining in the first quarter of the singles draw.
The next test for Tiafoe will be a fourth-round meeting against Matteo Arnaldi. Arnaldi also prevailed in a five-set marathon Saturday when he battled past Raphael Collignon 6-4, 6-7(5), 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(10-4). With the triumph, the Italian jumped 11 spots to No. 82 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, securing a return to the Top 100.
In other action, Felix Auger-Aliassime avoided the Roland Garros upset trend Saturday when the fourth seed defeated Brandon Nakashima 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(4), 7-6(1) to reach the fourth round. The Canadian remains one of just two Top-10 seeds left in the draw alongside second seed Alexander Zverev.
After dropping the opening set, Auger-Aliassime started dictating with his forehand and raised his level in the key moments. In the third set, the Canadian rallied from 1-4 down and saved a set point at 4-5, 30/40 with a clutch forehand winner before cruising through the tie-break.
Despite dropping serve early in the fourth set, Auger-Aliassime battled back to force a tie-break, in which he lost just one point before sealing victory with his 15th ace of the match, according to Infosys Stats. With his three-hour 48-minute triumph, Auger-Aliassime equalled his best result at the clay major, having reached the fourth round in 2022 and 2024.
The 25-year-old will next face Alejandro Tabilo, who defeated home hope Moise Kouame 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(9). Should Auger-Aliassime win his fourth-round meeting against the Chilean, he would complete the set of reaching the last eight at all four majors.
