Zverev, Djokovic on collision course in Beijing

Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic could meet in the quarter-finals at the China Open in Beijing, following Monday’s draw at the ATP 500 event.

Zverev captured his second major title earlier this month at the US Open and then returned to action at last week’s Laver Cup in London, where he helped Team Europe defeat Team World.

The German is a three-time semi-finalist in Beijing and opens against British lefty Cameron Norrie. Zverev has won 46 of his past 47 matches against left handers. The No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings will face Chinese wild card Shang Juncheng or Sebastian Baez in the second round.

Zverev has an opportunity to gain further ground on Jannik Sinner in the battle for Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honours this week. Sinner is not in action, so will drop the 500 points he gained by winning the title last year.

Djokovic is six-time champion in Beijing and holds a perfect 29-0 record at the event, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Record. The 39-year-old Serbian is competing at the event for the first time since 2015 and will play Nuno Borges in the first round. In the pair’s only previous Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting, Djokovic defeated Borges en route to his 101st tour-level trophy in Athens.

Djokovic could play Juan Manuel Cerundolo or Buyunchaokete in the second round and is then on a collision course with top seed Zverev in the quarter-finals. Djokovic leads Zverev 9-5 in their Head2Head and won their most recent meeting at Roland Garros in 2025.

Third seed Daniil Medvedev, who beat Zverev in Beijing last year, and eighth seed Jakub Mensik are also in the top half. The 2023 finalist Medvedev, who is into the semi-finals in Hangzhou this week, will play a qualifier in the first round, while Mensik takes on Alexander Bublik in a popcorn opening clash.

Second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime will aim to gain instant revenge on Karen Khachanov when they face in the first round. Khachanov beat the Canadian in the second round at the US Open and eventually reached the semi-finals.

Seventh seed Learner Tien is in the same section and meets former Top-10 star Hubert Hurkacz in the first round. Fifth seed Alex de Minaur takes on Mariano Navone and could meet Flavio Cobolli in the quarter-finals.

Cobolli is well-positioned in fifth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin and is aiming to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time. The Italian plays Roman Safiullin in his opening match in Beijing. Read more about the Live Race To Turin here.
