Bergs completes stunning turnaround, wins first ATP Tour title in Eastbourne

Zizou Bergs completed a stunning turnaround to his 2026 season on Sunday at the Lexus Eastbourne Open, where he lifted his first ATP Tour title.

The 27-year-old Belgian capped a remarkable week by battling back to defeat Ugo Humbert 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the final of the grass-court ATP 250. Arriving in Eastbourne on a six-match tour-level losing streak, Bergs became the first Belgian man to win an ATP Tour title on grass.

Having finished runner-up in Auckland and 's-Hertogenbosch last year, Bergs made it third time lucky in Eastbourne. The Belgian held his nerve after the final was halted by rain on Saturday following just three games and resumed on Sunday.

“Thank you to my team,” Bergs said. “We make a great team. We make fun together and we definitely work together really well to always improve. If the results are not there, we keep focusing on improving, and that’s why we’re here today standing with the trophy.”

With his gritty two-hour, three-minute victory, Bergs became the seventh first-time ATP Tour champion of 2026. The Belgian has climbed 11 places to No. 37 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings this week and is guaranteed a new career high when the PIF ATP Rankings are updated on Monday.

Bergs also squared his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Humbert at 1-1, although the Frenchman will have an immediate opportunity for revenge. The pair have been drawn against each other in the first round at Wimbledon, where they are set to meet on Tuesday.

Humbert was chasing his eighth ATP Tour title, and second on grass after winning in Halle in 2021. The Frenchman is the 27th seed at Wimbledon next week.

"Zizou, I would like to congratulate you for you first ATP title," Humbert said. "You played really great today, so congratulations to you and your team. See you in two days for the rematch at Wimbledon!"

After their Eastbourne final was suspended because of rain on Saturday after just three games, Humbert and Bergs returned to court on Sunday morning with little separating them. Humbert claimed the opening set after producing a superb break at 4-3, but Bergs never lost belief.

The Belgian saved both break points he faced across the final two sets, according to Infosys ATP Stats, while striking 21 winners to Humbert's 16. When the Frenchman's backhand return drifted into the net on championship point, Bergs leapt into the air and let out a mighty roar.
