Matteo Berrettini withdrew from Roland Garros on Thursday just before the draw ceremony. The Italian retired in the second set of his third-round match in Rome against Casper Ruud due to a right oblique injury.
“Ciao everyone, I unfortunately had to make the very difficult decision to withdraw from @rolandgarros,” Berrettini wrote on Instagram. “I just ran out of time to feel 100% ready to compete at the level that is needed.”
The 29-year-old has a 13-10 record this year according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. His best result came in Miami, where the former No. 6 player in the PIF ATP Rankings reached the quarter-finals.
“I’m looking forward to competing on grass and am already preparing with my team,” Berrettini wrote. “I’m very appreciative of the support I feel from you all and can’t wait to be back out on the court 🔨❤️”
David Goffin (foot) and Raphael Collignon also withdrew ahead of the draw.
