Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori’s bid to improve on last year’s runner-up finish at the Australian Open remains on track after a dominant quarter-final victory on Tuesday in Melbourne.
The third-seeded duo eased past Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral 6-4, 7-6(4) to seal its spot in the semi-finals and improve to eight consecutive match wins. Bolelli/Vavassori, who fell short to Matthew Ebden and Rohan Bopanna in the 2024 final in Melbourne, began the 2025 season by clinching the title at the Adelaide International earlier this month.
In typically clinical fashion, Bolelli and Vavassori saved each of the three break points they faced in their quarter-final clash, according to Infosys Stats, and needed just one of their own to convert. For a spot in the championship match in Melbourne, the Italians will face Andre Goransson and Sem Verbeek, who later stunned top seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic.
Goransson and Verbeek overcame the 2024 Year-End ATP Doubles No. 1 presented by PIF winning team 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in one hour, 53 minutes. The Swedish-Dutch duo, which has lifted one tour-level title as a team (Newport 2024), is into their maiden Grand Slam semi-final.
Arevalo and Pavic, who won the 2024 Roland Garros crown, were unable to convert three of the four break points they created, one of which came when Goransson/Verbeek served for the match at 5-3 in the final set.
