Ignacio Buse has become just the fourth Peruvian to break the Top 50 of the PIF ATP Rankings after his stunning run from qualifying to the title at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open.
Gonet Geneva Open champion Learner Tien also hit a career high after a successful week on the European clay. ATPTour.com looks at the movers in the PIF ATP Rankings as of Monday, 25 May.
No. 31 Ignacio Buse, +26 (Career High)
Buse joined Pablo Arraya, Jaime Yzaga and Luis Horna in two exclusive clubs within Peruvian tennis by triumphing at the clay ATP 500 in Hamburg, adding his name to the lists of the only men from the South American country to lift a tour-level trophy and enter the Top 50 of the PIF ATP Rankings, respectively. Buse dropped just two sets across seven matches (including qualifying) in northern Germany, and defeated Top-30 opponents Flavio Cobolli, Jakub Mensik and Tommy Paul en route.
No. 7 Alex de Minaur, +2
Established Top-10 star Alex de Minaur snapped a three-match losing streak with three impressive wins in Hamburg. He toughed out three-set triumphs against Francisco Cerundolo and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, before routing Luciano Darderi for the loss of just three games. Although he fell short of a maiden ATP Tour final appearance on clay after losing to Paul in the semi-finals, De Minaur has climbed two spots to World No. 7 ahead of Roland Garros.
No. 18 Learner Tien, +2 (Career High)
American lefty Learner Tien had earned just four tour-level wins on clay prior to his Geneva debut, but he set that record straight in spectacular fashion at the Swiss ATP 250. Tien took out former Top-10 star Stefanos Tsitsipas, his good friend Alex Michelsen, and second seed Alexander Bublik before rallying past Mariano Navone in the final. Tien enters Roland Garros at a career-high World No. 18, 49 spots higher than he was 12 months ago.
No. 21 Tommy Paul, +5
Having dropped out the Top 20 after an early exit in Rome, Paul made immediate strides back towards that group with a championship-match run in Hamburg. He saved seven match points across two different sets on two different days to down Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the second round, while he later took out De Minaur in the semi-finals for his fourth Top-10 win on clay.
No. 67 Aleksandar Kovacevic, +27
Kovacevic initially fell in the final round of Hamburg qualifying to Arthur Gea, but then overcame the same opponent in the first round after being awarded a spot as a lucky loser at the ATP 500. The 27-year-old then stunned top seed and World No. 5 Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets for the biggest win of his career by PIF ATP Ranking en route to the semi-finals, where eventual champion Buse proved too strong.
