Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who will face Thiago Agustin Tirante in the second round at Roland Garros on Wednesday, is the protagonist of one of the most striking paradoxes on Tour.

His ranking, his presence in big tournaments, his wins over top players, and his ability to compete on significant stages all suggest a well-established member of the elite. However, there is still a gaping hole in his resume. The No. 23 player in the PIF ATP Rankings has never won an ATP Tour title.

The Spaniard, who has let five finals slip through his fingers – Basel, Washington, Acapulco, and Delray Beach in 2025, as well as Monte-Carlo in 2022 – is the highest-ranked player with an empty trophy cabinet.

The stat hits hard because the player it belongs to has earned his place on merit and merit alone. Davidovich Fokina is no flash in the pan, nor is he a specialist in certain weeks of the calendar. Having peaked at No. 14 in the PIF ATP Rankings, his record reads 171 wins, 155 defeats and no singles titles. That is, this is a player with significant experience on Tour. The Spaniard has reached the final of big tournaments and is consistent enough to have earned himself a ranking at the business end of the Tour.

Therein lies the challenge. Davidovich Fokina needs to convert his quality into a title. He has already ticked off all the boxes that normally precede a trophy: a game to compete with the best, fitness to endure long matches, sufficient weapons to change the pace of a game, a personality to entertain the fans and weeks of impressive performances. But the 26-year-old is yet to close out a title bout. That final step is not always the biggest, but it does tend to be the most difficult.

A huge door opened for him following his run to the championship match at the 2022 ATP Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo. That experience took him to another dimension: he notched a win against Novak Djokovic and earned a shot at the title on one of the most demanding stages of the calendar (lost the final to Stefanos Tsitsipas). Since then, Davidovich Fokina has consistently proven his worth, but a trophy continues to resist him.

The difficulty of a first title is more than just a sporting challenge. It is also a mental endeavour. In a final, everything counts double. The burden of pressure is greater, decision-making more delicate, and every advantage lost hurts all the more. Davidovich Fokina, an impulsive, intense and creative player, has often used that energy as one of his greatest weapons. The challenge lies in reining it in when the context requires precision.

The encouraging thing is that the Malaga native does not need a rebuild. His tennis already has everything it takes to win. His forehand is potent, his mobility allows him to defend and counter-attack, his backhand is reliable enough to soak up anything thrown at it, he has a delightful drop shot and his athletic ability makes him an awkward opponent for anyone.

Being one of the best players in the PIF ATP Rankings without a tour-level title speaks volumes about his level. Reaching those heights without having crossed the finish line is no mean feat. In a way, the stat reflects his competitiveness. Davidovich Fokina has managed to survive at the top without the mental and statistical boost that comes with a title.

Through the generations, Spanish tennis has enjoyed a wide variety of champions: historic dominators, clay specialists, hugely consistent players, late bloomers, silent assassins. However, Davidovich Fokina is in a category of his own: the player capable of reeling off high-impact weeks without having brought it all together in a final. His challenge is not to prove that he belongs on Tour. He has already done that. His challenge is earning himself material proof of that belonging.

The day when his first title comes, a flood of them will very likely follow. Then we will be having a different conversation. Until that moment, though, the challenge still looms over him, as visible as it is inspiring.
