Jealousy can be a dangerous thing in relationships, but there's no trouble in Tennis Paradise after Alex de Minaur's latest comments about girlfriend Katie Boulter in Indian Wells.
The tennis power couple shared a memorable weekend when De Minaur won the Acapulco ATP 500 title last Saturday before jetting to see Boulter triumph at the San Diego WTA 500 on Sunday. De Minaur entered the BNP Paribas Open one spot off his career-high PIF ATP Ranking at No. 10, while Boulter soared to a new high of World No. 27 behind her trophy run.
While the Aussie may have bragging rights with his higher standing, there is one key aspect of his girlfriend's game that he both covets and admires.
"When I'm watching her play... I get a little bit jealous if I'm honest, because I see her just smacking winners left and right," De Minaur told Tennis Channel on Friday after a 6-1, 6-2 win against Taro Daniel.
"I'm like, jeez, I wish I had that sort of firepower in my game. I see her play the game and it just looks so easy. And I'm out here just running side to side, grinding for every point, having to work. She just goes out there, slaps a couple of winners and plays great tennis."
The San Diego final was the first match of Boulter's that De Minaur was able to watch live this season. But whether they are together at the same tournament site or competing on opposite sides of the world, the pair fuel each other to greater heights.
"I think it's been instrumental to both of our success," he said of their relationship. "You've got a partner that knows exactly what you're feeling in every moment, whether you're winning, whether you're losing, the highs and lows. We both can be there for each other no matter what. Being in that same workplace, we know what each other needs.
"She's helped me a lot in dealing with results and accepting results. In the past I've been quite harsh on myself for not getting the results I wanted. She's helped me a lot in having that perspective and trusting the process and trusting all the work that you put in behind the scenes and just enjoying it more out there, regardless of the results."
Wins and losses may not mean everything, but De Minaur is already plotting how he and Boulter can top their twin titles.
"It's been great having her around," he continued, "and even now that we're both at basically career highs, the sky's the limit."
