Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are no strangers to sharing the stage when stakes are at their highest, but Thursday at Wimbledon, the two rivals took to Centre Court under different circumstances.
Under a closed roof at the All England Club, Djokovic and Alcaraz hit together as the preparations ramp up for the grass-court major, which begins on Monday. Despite their fierce battles in recent years, the mood was relaxed, with both players exchanging rallies and working through their routines.
The stars have met in the past two Wimbledon finals, with Alcaraz coming out on top to claim his first two titles at SW19. The Spaniard memorably ended Djokovic’s run of four consecutive Wimbledon crowns — spanning 2018-2022 (not held 2020) — in a five-set thriller in the 2023 final, before successfully defending his title last summer.
However, Djokovic exacted revenge by defeating Alcaraz to capture his maiden gold medal at last year’s Paris Olympics, now holding a 5-3 lead in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series.
There is plenty at stake for both men over the next fortnight. Djokovic is bidding for a record 25th major title and an eighth Wimbledon trophy, which would tie Roger Federer’s all-time record. Meanwhile, Alcaraz is aiming to become the first man since Bjorn Borg as the only men in the Open Era to complete the Roland Garros-Wimbledon double in consecutive years.
Alcaraz, the No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, arrives at the third major of the season riding an 18-match winning streak, while Djokovic (sixth) is at his lowest seeding at Wimbledon since 2018.
