Five shocking facts about seismic Djokovic upset at US Open

Mariano Navone earned a stunning upset against Novak Djokovic Sunday evening at the US Open.

Djokovic had not lost in the first round of a major in more than 20 years
The Serbian has lost early by his standards at majors here and there over the years. At Roland Garros this year, Joao Fonseca upset Djokovic in the third round. But nothing like this.

Djokovic had not fallen in the first round of a major since the 2006 Australian Open, eight months before Spanish star Rafael Jodar was born. The only other time he lost his first-round match at a Grand Slam tournament was at the 2005 Australian Open.

Navone had never won a five-set match
Djokovic entered the pair's clash Sunday evening with a 42-12 record in five-set matches, while Navone was 0-4. The Argentine had never won a five-set encounter, including his defeat in a final-set tie-break to Jakub Mensik at Roland Garros earlier this year.

The 24-time major champion has been consistent at Slams lately
It is fair to say that Djokovic arrived at Flushing Meadows without being at his top level, following his defeat to Thiago Agustin Tirante at the Cincinnati Open. But outside of his loss to Fonseca in Paris, he has consistently found his form at the majors.

At his previous 16 Slams, Djokovic had won four titles, reached three finals, six semi-finals and a quarter-final.

Djokovic has won more majors than Navone has played Grand Slam matches
The gap in experience when Djokovic and Navone walked onto the court Sunday was vast. The Serbian is a 24-time Slam champion who had won 95 matches at the US Open. By contrast, Navone had been 6-10 at the majors and 57-67 in tour-level matches.

Navone has historically struggled on hard courts
The Argentine arrived in New York with a 12-29 tour-level record on hard courts for a 29.3 winning percentage. Navone was 4-8 on the surface this year before facing Djokovic for the first time. The fourth seed entered their clash with a 741-139 record on hard courts (84.2%).
