Tomas Machac and Zhizhen Zhang earned an upset third-round win at the Australian Open on Sunday when they defeated 2020 champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Czech-Chinese team, teaming for the first time this week, broke Ram and Salisbury's serve three times to beat the third seeds after one hour and 36 minutes. They will next play Santiago Gonzalez and Neal Skupski or Ariel Behar and Adam Pavlasek.
Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open Sunday but only just. The sixth seeds moved past Americans Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(10-5).
In a tight clash, Gonzalez and Molteni failed to convert three match points at the 6-5 in the third set but remained patient, pulling away in the third-set tie-break to advance after two hours and 28 minutes.
The Argentines best result at majors together were quarter-final runs at Roland Garros (2023) and the US Open (2023). They will aim to go one step further when they play Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden or Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic.
In other action, Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz defeated Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic 6-3, 6-3. The eighth seeds have yet to drop a set this week and are now 6-1 on the season after reaching the Brisbane final earlier this month.
Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori also advanced, downing Nikola Cacic and Denys Molchanov 6-2, 6-2.
