Jack Draper laid down an impressive opening marker at the HSBC Championships on Tuesday, when he dispatched American Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 6-1 to reach the second round in west London.
The British No. 1 has earned victories against Jannik Sinner (2021) and Carlos Alcaraz (2024) at the ATP 500 grass-court event in the past and returned to The Queen’s Club this week at No. 6 in the PIF ATP Rankings.
Draper is just the fourth British player to be a top-two seed at the tournament but he did not let the pressure faze him in a dominant first-round performance against Brooksby. The 23-year-old won 93 per cent (27/29) of his first-serve points and did not face a break point, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
"My preparation has not been unbelievable. I have had a couple of niggles," Draper said. "I was thinking I haven't played too much on grass either after a long clay-court season, trying to adapt to that surface and it is a challenge. I am enjoying being at home and staying in my own bed."

Draper leads Brooksby 4-0 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series, having defeated the 24-year-old en route to the Indian Wells title in March. The lefty, who is 4-0 in opening rounds at The Queen’s Club, will next play Alexei Popyrin. The Australian defeated countryman Aleksandar Vukic 6-2, 6-7(9), 7-3(3).
Draper is chasing his second tour-level title on grass, after winning in Stuttgart last season.
"The court is good, it has held up well. It is amazing that the girls got to play here in London,"Draper added when talking about the WTA event held at The Queen's Club. "Queen's is one of the best tournaments in the world... I am really happy to be on the centre court again this year."
Jiri Lehecka upset former finalist and fifth seed Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-2 to earn his third Top 20 win on grass. The 23-year-old Czech missed the grass swing last year due to injury but has fond memories on the surface, highlighted by his fourth-round run at Wimbledon in 2023.
Lehecka competed on grass last week in Stuttgart, where he advanced to the quarter-finals. De Minaur was playing on the surface for the first time this season and looked uncomfortable in periods during the 77-minute clash in west London. The Australian won just 68 per cent of his first-serve points and committed 14 winners to 28 unforced errors.
The World No. 30 Lehecka will meet Billy Harris or Gabriel Diallo in the second round.
