Arthur Fils on Saturday announced his withdrawal from Roland Garros due to injury.
“I hope everyone is good,” Fils told the media in Paris. “Just quick, I have to say something quickly. I'm not going to be able to play here this year. It's a shame, of course. I'm very sorry about it.”
The Frenchman revealed that in Rome, he felt pain around his hip, which bothered him “a lot”. The 21-year-old did not want to take any risk, so he retired four games into his second-round match with Andrea Pellegrino.
“After, I did some exams. Everything was looking pretty fine, but still a lot of pain. So I was not able to practise for the last two weeks,” Fils said. “Actually, the practice today were my first-ever points since two weeks in Rome.
“Yeah, I will not be fit 100 per cent to play the tournament, and I will not take any risk like I did last year. I don't want to be stupid.”
One year ago, Fils did not compete after Toronto due to a back injury. “For sure it’s not the same as last year,” he explained. But the No. 19 player in the PIF ATP Rankings is unsure if it is his lower back, hip or psoas. Fils just knows the pain has bothered him for a couple of weeks.
“It’s just pain, pain that’s bothering me. And when I step on the court, it just here. It's never going somewhere,” Fils said. “If it was the last tournament of my life, I will have played, but now that I have 10 more years, 15 more years, I cannot do every time the same mistake.”
Fils had been set to face Stan Wawrinka in the first round. Jesper de Jong has taken his place in the draw as a lucky loser.
