Arthur Fils retired after just four games in his opening match Saturday at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. Italian Andrea Pellegrino led 4-0 when the Frenchman could not continue due to a physical issue.

Fils, a semi-finalist in Madrid and champion in Barcelona last month, called a medical timeout after the third game and was treated off court.

Approaching the dates of his home Slam, Roland Garros, Fils leaves Rome with a 22-7 season record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.

The qualifier Pellegrino, World No. 155 in the PIF ATP Rankings, is into the third round. He will next face 20th seed Frances Tiafoe, who overcame Peru's Ignacio Buse 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2.
