Frances Tiafoe and Arthur Fils have both enjoyed dominant runs so far at the Cincinnati Open, but only one man can take home the trophy come Sunday’s championship match in Ohio.
The two finalists have dropped just one set each so far at the hard-court ATP Masters 1000 event, where they will face off at 4:30 p.m. local time (EDT) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Both the 17th-seeded Tiafoe and 21st-seeded Fils are chasing their first Masters 1000 title, and fans can expect plenty from a matchup featuring two of the ATP Tour’s most exhilarating shotmakers.
“[It will be] a helluva show,” Tiafoe said after his straight-sets semi-final victory against Brandon Nakashima on Saturday night. “And hopefully another ‘W’ with that. He’s a helluva player. Moves great, serves great. He has the shotmaking [ability]. He’s going to want it, he’s going to be pumped up, and so am I. May the best man win.”
Tiafoe will be competing in his second Masters 1000 final, having also reached the Cincinnati championship match in 2024 (l. to Sinner). The 28-year-old downed second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti en route to this year's final and is bidding to become the first American man to lift the trophy in Ohio since Andy Roddick in 2006.
“It feels pretty damn good,” Tiafoe, who is 37-15 for the season, said when asked about how it feels to be in the final. “I’m really happy with it. It’s been a great week and a great weekend, unexpectedly, so I’m super happy.”
In order to claim title glory in Cincinnati, however, Tiafoe will have to overcome a man who has consistently excelled on the Masters 1000 stage in 2026. Fils reached the semi-finals in Miami and Madrid, the quarter-finals in Indian Wells and Montreal, and is now 19-5 at that level this year, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. In Cincinnati, he has defeated multiple Top-10 opponents (Alex de Minaur and Flavio Cobolli) at the same event for the first time in his career.
Having also picked up an ATP 500 title in Barcelona in April, the 22-year-old Fils is now up to sixth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, even despite missing the entire Australian swing and Roland Garros due to injuries. Yet while he is well set in his bid to secure a debut qualification for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals, there will only be one thing on the Frenchman’s mind come Sunday in Cincinnati.
“I need to focus on the tournament,” Fils said when asked about his strong year so far after defeating Cobolli in the semi-finals. “Of course, being sixth in the race is cool but I have a final to play tomorrow. I’m going to try to bring the title home and go to New York with a lot of confidence.”
Sunday’s championship match will be just the second Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting between Tiafoe and Fils. Their previous meeting was also on a Masters 1000 hard court, with Fils prevailing 7-6(11), 5-7, 6-2 in a third-round clash in Miami in 2025.
With Tiafoe (up 11 spots to No. 12 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings) now pushing for a Top-10 return after nearly three years away and Fils (up 10 spots to No. 11) on the brink of breaking into that elite group for the first time, the Cincinnati final will be an intriguing collision between two of this season’s most consistent performers.
