In an Instagram post on Tuesday, American Ryan Harrison announced his retirement from professional tennis. The 31-year-old, who turned pro in 2007, reached a career-high Pepperstone ATP Ranking of No. 40 in 2017, the same year in which he won his lone tour-level singles title in Memphis.

"Turn out the lights, the party's over," Harrison wrote on Instagram. "With the new year kicking off it starts a new chapter in my life. After a long battle with health issues over the last few years, the time has come for me to put an end to my playing career. I couldn’t be more grateful for the moments I had on court."

In addition to his singles success, Harrison also reached a career-high Pepperstone ATP Doubles Ranking of No. 16 in 2017, when he won the Roland Garros doubles title with his good friend Michael Venus. He also qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals with Venus in 2017 and reached the semi-finals in London with an undefeated group-stage record.

Harrison represented the United States in Davis Cup and at the 2012 London Olympics, where he competed in singles. Four years earlier, the former Top 10 junior made a winning start to his ATP Tour career with a debut victory in Houston. His 2008 victory against Pablo Ceuvas at age 15 made him the youngest player to win a tour-level match since Rafael Nadal in 2002.

Harrison's most recent tour-level singles appearance came in Delray Beach in 2021, after which he primarily competed on the ATP Challenger Tour.

"I consider myself one of the luckiest people in the world to have had a dream and had the opportunity to live out that dream," he continued in his post, before going on to thank all the people who have helped him along the journey of his career.

"As one door closes another door opens," he concluded. "I look forward to giving back and helping as many as I can achieve their dreams. This is only the beginning."
