Marcelo Melo and Edouard Roger-Vasselin have found immediate success in their first outing of the season as a pair, advancing to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open presented by Itau Tuesday.
The Brazilian and Frenchman rallied from a set down to defeat American singles stars Christopher Eubanks and Ben Shelton 6-7(5), 7-5, 10-8. They will next face second seeds Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek.
Earlier in the day Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz held their nerve in a Match Tie-break for the second match running Tuesday to become the first semi-finalists in Miami.
The German duo downed third seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-7 in one hour and 50 minutes on Court Butch Buchholz. Krawietz and Puetz won 80 per cent (41/51) of points behind their first serves, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to level their Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Ram and Salisbury at 1-1.
Tuesday’s victory earned Krawietz and Puetz their second straight ATP Masters 1000 semi-final appearance after they reached the same stage at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells earlier this month. The pair is chasing its second ATP Tour crown after it won an ATP 500 crown on home soil in Hamburg last year.
Krawietz and Puetz await the winners of Dodig/Krajicek and Melo/ Roger-Vasselin.
Top seeds Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden also needed a Match Tie-break to advance. The Indian-Australian pair overcame John-Patrick Smith and Sem Verbeek 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-7 to reach the last four. The Australian Open champions next face Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos or Lloyd Glasspool and Jean-Julien Rojer.
