Robert Cash and JJ Tracy are doubles champions on the ATP Tour for the first time. The Americans won their maiden tour-level trophy on Saturday at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo, where they overcame Blake Bayldon and Tristan Schoolkate 7-6(4), 6-4 in Los Cabos.
They are the third American doubles champions in the Los Cabos tournament history after John Isner triumphed with Mexico's Hans Hach Verdugo in 2021 and William Blumberg won with Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in 2022.
Cash and Tracy are up four spots to No. 19 in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Rankings with the win. They arrived at the ATP 250 having last week won the Hall of Fame Open in Newport, which transitioned from an ATP 250 to an ATP Challenger Tour event this year.
"It's huge. It's our first ATP event win ever," Cash said. "Hopefully we can take this momentum and keep it rolling into the hard court swing in the US and beyond. Means so much. I am so happy to get it here in Los Cabos and hopefully it's a first of many."
Cash and Tracy rallied from 3-5 in the first set, saving on set point on return at 4-5. They then battled back from a break down in the second set, sealing victory on their second match point after one hour and 36 minutes in their first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with their Australian opponents. This was the Cash and Tracy's sole straight-sets win this week.
Since making their ATP Tour debut in Newport last year, where they reached the championship match, the duo has captured seven ATP Challenger titles. They also advanced to the semi-finals at tour-level events in Dallas and Delray Beach earlier this season.
"One of our goals is that we want to win one of every single [category] tournament," Tracy said. "This year we knocked off a 125, 175 and [now an ATP] 250. So, definitely for the rest of the year, gearing up for the US Open and keep progressing and get [an ATP] 500, [Masters] 1000 win next."
Andreozzi/Arends triumph in Bastad
Top seeds Guido Andreozzi and Sander Arends capped their debut week as a team in style at the Nordea Open in Bastad, where they defeated Adam Pavlasek and Jan Zielinski 6-7(4), 7-5, 10-6 to win the title.
The Argentine-Dutch team did not drop a set en route to the final and then showed their fighting spirt in the title match, rallying from a set and a break down to triumph after one hour and 45 minutes at the ATP 250 clay-court event.
"It feels very special," Arends said. "In 2017 I made my first ATP Tour final, playing on this beautiful centre court. In 2021 I won my first ATP title and this is my first, second title. I think I like it here."
Arends, 33, is up two spots to No. 23 in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Rankings and is now 5-3 in tour-level doubles finals. Andreozzi, 33, is at No. 39 in the Live Doubles Rankings and holds a perfect 3-0 record in title matches.
Cabral/Miedler win first ATP Tour title as team in Gstaad
Francisco Cabral and Lucas Miedler clinched their first title of the season as a team on Sunday at the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad, where they earned a comeback 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 10-3 win against Hendrik Jebens and Albano Olivetti.
The top seeds won 86 per cent of their first-serve points and saved both break points they faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to earn victory after one hour and 57 minutes at the ATP 250 clay-court event.
Cabral and Miedler, who did not lose a set to reach their first tour-level final as a team, joined forces for the first time in April. The Portuguese-Austrian duo won ATP Challenger Tour crowns in Madrid and Bordeaux earlier this year and reached the semi-finals on grass at the ATP 500 in Halle.
Cabral has now won three tour-level titles, with his Gstaad triumph his first since 2022. Miedler is 8-3 in tour-level finals, having won his previous seven crowns with countryman Alexander Erler.
