Few players on the ATP Tour use the underarm serve as creatively — and effectively — as Corentin Moutet.
During his second-round win against Daniel Altmaier at the Mallorca Championships presented by ecotrans Group on Wednesday, the Frenchman hit six, winning three of those points. It’s a shot that Moutet, now into his first quarter-final of 2025, has become known for. But there is an underlying logic.
“It depends on the position of the opponent,” Moutet said when asked about the shot at Roland Garros last month. “Some opponents are very close to the baseline. In this case, it’s not the best shot to use. I don’t go on the court with any tactic, because everybody’s different. I’m trying to adapt.”
