Munar converts 11th match point in Wimbledon rollercoaster

Jaume Munar will be able to sleep easy on Thursday night after narrowly avoiding a potential disaster at Wimbledon, where he ultimately reached the third round for the first time in his career.

Leading Fabian Marozsan by two sets and a break, Munar had one foot in the locker room, but the finish line proved elusive. The Spaniard was forced to dig deep, needing 11 match points to seal a 6-2, 6-3, 7-6(9) victory after a rollercoaster tie-break.

“It was unbelievable the way I had to manage the end of the match,” Munar told ATPTour.com. “I think I was playing quite good tennis and was on top for 90 per cent of the match, then I started to struggle a little bit. But it is what it is, when you’re fighting for these things and trying to make steps forward, it’s always a challenge. I was expecting difficult moments, but I’m happy to have a chance.”

Munar let slip two consecutive match points on return at 5/2 in the third set, then a further three in the ensuing game on his serve. Though he wasn’t undone by his own work: Marozsan swung freely and took it to the Spaniard, who remained undeterred and responded well.

In a dramatic tie-break to end their second-round clash, Munar squandered four more match points before having to fend off a set point on his serve, doing so with an unreturned first delivery out wide at 7/8 before eventually closing out victory after two hours, 17 minutes.

“I was trying to be calm and think point by point, it’s never easy, but I had the mentality that even if I lose the third set, I was going to have a chance,” Munar said. “I was feeling that I was the better player on court today.”

With his victory, Munar is up to a career-high No. 50 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and is now at 17 tour-level wins in 2025, just two off his year-best 19 recorded in 2022. Into the third round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon, Munar will next face British No. 1 Jack Draper or former champion Marin Cilic.

Munar faced a similar situation two weeks ago at Queen’s Club, where he converted his eighth set point to level his clash with Carlos Alcaraz but fell in the third.
