Shortly after Alexander Zverev won his first Grand Slam title Sunday at Roland Garros by defeating Flavio Cobolli in the final, 14-time champion Rafael Nadal congratulated the German on social media.
“Congratulations @alexzverev123 on winning @rolandgarros!π,” Nadal posted on his Instagram Story. “So well deserved after all the hard work and perseverance. You have been chasing your first Grand Slam for a long time, and you absolutely deserve it.“
Nadal has spent notable moments on Court Philippe-Chatrier with Zverev. In 2022, Zverev suffered a catastrophic injury when moving to his right to chase down Nadal's forehand in their semi-final clash, leading him to retire from the match. The German tore several lateral ligaments in his right ankle, and ended his season following the injury.
Two years later, Zverev defeated Nadal in the first round, which proved to be the Spaniard's final match at the clay-court major.
Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Zverev in the 2024 final, also sent his best wishes to the No. 3 player in the PIF ATP Rankings.
"Congratulations Sascha for the title!π," Alcaraz wrote in his Instagram Story. "You deserve it @alexzverev123."
Billie Jean King, German footballer Thomas Muller and F1 Driver Nico Hulkenberg were also among those who congratulated Zverev on his monumental victory.
"Congratulations to @AlexZverev on his very first Grand Slam Singles title!" King posted on X. "He is also the first man with Type 1 Diabetes to win a major. What a victory for everyone living with this disease."
"Congratulations, Sascha!! ππ," Muller posted on X, with a video of his reaction to Zverev's triumph.
"You did it!!! Congrats @alexzverev123π," Hulkenberg posted on his Instagram Story.
Rod Laver also commended both Zverev and Cobolli following the final.
"Roland Garros finishes with a great final between two players who gave everything out there," the Australian legend wrote on X. "Well done Zverev, a deserving champion. Cobolli showed real fight throughout the match and will surely have his moment soon enough. Good luck to both on the grass!"
