Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori successfully defended their Roland Garros mixed doubles title on Thursday.
The top-seeded Italians overcame Gabriela Dabrowski and Evan King 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 in challenging, windy conditions on Court Philippe-Chatrier. After dropping the opening set, Errani and Vavassori raised their level to secure victory in 79 minutes and capture their fourth Grand Slam mixed doubles title together.
“I’m still living this dream that is never ending,” Errani said during the trophy ceremony. “This court is incredible. My dreams have [come true] here. Andrea, you are my best friend, and to share this with you is something crazy. I’m enjoying playing with you too much, it’s too funny. You are too good.”
Vavassori added: “Thank you Sara. You improve me as a player and a person. You are the first person I want to speak with when I lose a match. I’m really grateful to have this journey with you because it’s something I do not take for granted.”
The title is the 10th major trophy of Errani’s illustrious career. The 39-year-old has won six women’s doubles majors, including two Roland Garros titles, in addition to her mixed doubles success. Vavassori, meanwhile, remains in contention for a second trophy this fortnight, having reached the men’s doubles semi-finals alongside Simone Bolelli.
Despite falling short in the final, Dabrowski was quick to praise the champions.
“You guys are amazing,” Dabrowski said. “We look up to you so much. You inspire us to be better and I think that’s what matters in this competition. Thank you for everything you do for the game of tennis and for the game of doubles.”
